GPS tracking can add useful visibility when a vehicle or mobile asset moves unexpectedly, but it should form part of a broader security plan that includes keys, access, storage, insurance and response procedures.

Identify the highest-risk assets

Prioritise vehicles, trailers, plant and equipment that are valuable, frequently left away from the depot or moved between crews and sites.

Configure selective alerts

After-hours movement, ignition or departure from a storage geofence may warrant notification. Test alerts during normal operations to reduce false alarms and confirm who receives them.

Understand device limitations

Location updates depend on power, hardware, mobile coverage and reporting intervals. Ask a provider such as Fleet Watch to explain how each recommended device behaves if power is interrupted or coverage is limited.

Document the response

Decide who verifies an alert, who contacts the driver or site manager and when police or an insurer should be involved. Do not attempt unsafe recovery based only on a map location.
